Biography
Fiona Kerinauia is a founding member and senior Tiwi artist at Bima Wear, based in Wurrumiyanga, Bathurst Island. Since co-establishing the art centre in 1969, Fiona's extensive and prolific practice has been fundamental to shaping Bima Wear's aesthetic identity and design collection. Her work spans textile design, screen-printing, and garment creation, demonstrating both remarkable creative versatility and deep cultural knowledge across more than five decades of continuous practice.
Fiona's designs draw from the rich visual language of Tiwi culture—Country, ceremony, and the stories passed down through generations. Her work carries forward essential cultural narratives and design traditions, translating ancestral knowledge into contemporary textile arts. Working primarily in screen-printing, Fiona has created the majority of Bima Wear's design archive, establishing the visual foundation upon which the art centre's reputation has been built.
Beyond her continued cultural and creative input at Bima Wear, Fiona currently runs Wurrumiyanga's Patakijiyali museum and its small t-shirt printing area, where she plays a vital role in cultural preservation and community education. Her work is held in significant public collections, including the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney, where her textile design stands as testament to Bima Wear's cultural and artistic importance.
