Biography
Teresia Portaminni, known affectionately as Marmalade, is a founding member of Bima Wear who began working at the enterprise in 1975. After building Bima Wear's foundation through the 1970s, Marmalade spent three decades working at the clinic from 1980 onwards, serving her community in a different capacity. Upon retirement, she returned to where it all began—creating cultural attire for Tiwi ceremonies and supporting the next generation to grow the skills needed to run this important Tiwi women's enterprise for generations to come.
Beyond the sewing room, Marmalade co-ran on-Country training programs with her late husband, respected elder and educator Teddy Portaminni. These immersive Cultural Training Programs generously teach participants to do things 'Tiwi way': fishing, beach and medicine walks, freshwater swimming, basket weaving and spear-making workshops, storytelling, and song and dance sessions around the campfire. The programs offer an induction to Tiwi culture, cross-cultural communication, and the protocols involved in working respectfully with Aboriginal people, fostering relationships built on respect and mutuality.
Marmalade is a strong spirit of warmth and generosity. Her vision for Bima Wear and her beloved community is ambitious and heartfelt: "I just want Bima Wear to grow BIG! That's my goal." Through her decades of dedication—from her early days learning to sew, through her years of community service, and now in her return to Bima Wear—Marmalade continues to embody the strength, generosity, and cultural commitment that have sustained the enterprise for over fifty years.
