Tunga (Bark Basket)
Tiwi women make a tunga out of bark. We peel the outer bark off a stringy bark tree and then fold it in half to make a basket. We use kangaroo bones to make holes in the side so we can thread the string in and out. We put a stick in the middle so it stays open. A long time ago they used tunga for hunting and to carry babies, and even water. When someone passes away we put it upside down on top of the Pukumani (ceremony) pole.
